Yes, unschooling falls under the homeschooling umbrella in all of Canada and the US. However, each state and province does hava different requirements in terms of reporting. Canadians can check provincial requirements here, and Americans can check state laws here.
So you don’t have tests? How do you know he’s learning?
Nope, no tests or marks. I know he’s learning just by listening to him talk and watching him interact and live. The knowledge he shares and displays on a daily basis, and the way in which he interacts with the world around him throughout our travels is more advanced than many adults we know!
So will he still get a high school diploma?
What about college?
How’s he going to get a job?
Same way everyone else gets a job. Finding a field that interests him and using his relevant experience to apply for the job. As with any schooled adult, if training courses or certification is required, he will have the drive to complete those prerequisites.
My kid would just want to play video games and watch TV all day.
Isn’t unschooling just another word for lazy?
What about socialization and playing with kids his own age?
How’s he going to learn the important things.. like math and spelling?
But… kids need to learn about authority and schedules and alarm clocks…
I’m no teacher, there’s no way I can teach my kid everything he needs to know.. Right?
